Join the Drive to House South Africa in 2010
We need 2,500 South African Volunteers to participate in our one day Volunteer Builds!
Do you think you can spare just one day to build a home for a family! Sign-up and do it today!
The Niall Mellon Township Trust was established in 2002 with the aim of providing quality social housing for the impoverished communities in the townships of South Africa.
In our first year we completed 150 homes since then we have completed 13,500 homes in total. Our success has been possible because of the generosity and support we receive from our Volunteers, the general public and the South African and Irish governments.
Building through partnership, with Volunteers, community and government has been our objective from the beginning.
Each year we bring Irish Volunteers to South Africa to participate in a week long “Building Blitz”. This brings to a total of 10,000 Irish and South African Volunteers who have participated in our Building Blitzes to-date. The enormous generosity of Volunteers, partners and donors allows us to build homes in South Africa all year round and we have created employment for 2,000 people from the local townships.
As part of the charity’s ethos we are heavily involved in training and up-skilling our South African workers. Community development is also an integral part of the work of the charity, engaging local people in the planning and design of their new communities. All of this is done in close co-operation and partnership with the South African government at national and local level.
We are currently building in 23 townships, 13 in the Western Cape and 10 in Gauteng and although we have only been in existence for seven years we are currently the largest charity provider of quality social homes in South Africa.

You can be part of this too.
Can you spare one day out of your life to build a home for a family living in a shack? Please see out different Volunteer categories.

Bank employees build homes.
On Thursday, 30th July, 164 employees from the four divisions of the FirstRand Group will be building homes for families in Tembisa. This build will mark the end of the FirstRands Volunteers Programme Hands CAN Group Winter Drive.
The 164 employees wanted to work with the charity to restore the dignity and pride of their fellow South Africans by giving families a home. The FirstRand Volunteers Programme was launched in 2003 to support, facilitate and encourage employees across the four divisions of the group to participate in community initiatives. Where employees give of their time and money, they are matched R1 for R1 by the Programme. Since the Programme was launched in 2003, FirstRand employees have donated over R12.3m to charity organizations, which the FirstRand Volunteers Programme has matched this with a further R12,3m.

Corporate Volunteers Build 66 Homes at Tembesia
Friday 24th July saw the completion of a week of intensive building for corporate volunteers on site at Tembisa. Over 500 employees of the South African Breweries Ltd (SAB) have been consolidating their forces for a massive house-building project with the charity this week. The Volunteers built 66 houses during the build which was completed today. Participation in the build was part of SAB’s Social Investment Programme to leverage their influence and resources in line with the South African government’s developmental goals.
This housing initiative is part of the ongoing work by the charity to encourage corporate South Africa to assist its government and its people in meeting the housing backlog. The charity is confident that the shining example set by SAB will inspire other corporates to join us on our Volunteer Programme over the next few years. SAB had over 500 employees building houses in Tembisa and this commitment illustrates SAB’s and their employees generosity and compassion in assisting their fellow South Africans.
