As a Volunteer on site we give you a brief overview of the work of the charity. Volunteers are divided into different teams and each team has a team leader and is allocated a different task including: painting, digging or block laying.
Once on site, the team leader will allocate roles and look after you during the day.
Our Community Liaison Officers (CLO) or community members will also provide information on the township you are working in and will you on a shack visit to meet some of the families living in the township.
At the end of the day, Volunteers will get to see a handover house, where the beneficiary will receive the keys to his/her new house and cut the ceremonial ribbon.
Typical Volunteer Day Schedule:
07.30 Gather at a central point for collection by NMTT bus
08.00 Depart to township
08.30 Arrival on site; volunteers divided into teams
12.30 Lunch
15.30 house handover to beneficiary

Volunteer Build Days
Please remember to:
- Be realistic about your current state of health. Building is hard physical labour and temperatures can get very high in summer in the townships. We want as many people as possible to volunteer, but we don’t want anyone to come who will not be able to play their part of who is not physically up to the job.
- Be respectful: We cannot speak highly enough of the work levels achieved by our volunteers in previous years. In order to do our work to the best of our abilities we have a strict policy of no drinking alcohol on site during the working day. This is both dangerous and disrespectful to the community we are working with. We have a serious mission – building homes for communities – and anyone who does not take this seriously will be asked to leave.
- Safe: Safety is paramount on site and all volunteers must abide by the rules enforced by NMTT construction staff.
